Peculiar People

So you know how people in all ages have made a mockery of the prophets and their counsel? The same thing is happening today. I know this because of something David said at school that got his class laughing.

His (nosy) teacher for some reason was asking him in what situation Greg and I would leave him and his siblings home alone. David said, "For example when they go on a date."

After a brief pause his classmates erupted in giggles and his teacher looked confused. "Aren't your mom and dad married?"

I know a lot of the things the prophet counsels us to do seem silly or unnecessary or just plain absurd to many people today. Apparently for David's class, continuing courtship after marriage is one of those things. I am very happy to have had a part in providing such entertainment to those tittering nine year olds.

And after David assured his teacher that we were indeed married his teacher got over her surprise and told him, "Well then, you have cool parents."

Maybe she'll go home and ask her husband out on their first date in 20 years.

Well, that's disappointing. I was assuming all along that once I got married I wouldn't have to date anymore:)

Oh that's hilarious! I too hope that his teacher learned a little something there. =)

That teacher is cool for recognizing (after her shock) that it IS cool to date your spouse! Awesome!

I'm glad your David is educating the teacher! Now that is cool!

Yes, one of those things that is quite fun to be obedient in - though nursing babies make it a little tricky. ;0)

I am always amazed at how many people I talk to who say they've never or almost never gone out without their kids in tow. I'm so glad the church has emphasized it. I think it helps that you simply can't take the kids along to the temple, and from there you see that your kids will survive, and that there are definite benefits to talking over dinner without little ears (and little mouths, and hands, and..!) to worry about.

I like to think that a lot of married people go out, they maybe just don't call it a date. Or maybe not.

It is not only counsel, but it makes good ole common sense to spend alone time with a spouse. weird that would be foreign to her...

That's wisdom, Lis. And wouldn't it be so cool if she did go on a date with her hubby?

Yeah, you are totally cool parents :) I still go on dates with my husband - it'd be a bit sad to have gone to all that effort to find him and then stop going out with him!

I finally caught up on your blog. I've been away too long!

And I know I haven't been on a date in ages. I haven't been without kids for ages. But that was really cute how David's teacher said you are cool. :)

When Roy and I were young and had no kids as of yet, we were out at a restaurant for a date. It was other members of our wards who saw us there and wondered if it was our anniversary or something. It didn't occur to them that we were on a regular ol' date when we had just finished with that phase of our relationship and had no kids to get away from for a while. Frankly, I was a horrible cook so we had to go out to gain sustenance once in a while.
